Basically, you're making a variant of the idea that a musican who loves music and hates chemistry, but is miraculously talented and has a great chance of curing cancer, ought to do chemistry - because people who don't relate to him would benefit from it. A soft fascism, if you will.

We do math for the same reason we play and instrument and go to the cinema - we like it and it's entertaining.
There's a point to be made that the institution that is the university provides tax funded research and it ought to have positive outcome. However, the universities - especially in the US - have long been corrupted by capitalism and the idea that mathematicans must work to improve the well-being of society has been displaced together with the idea that university is a job-education. We must tear it down to build it up.
Don't demand use-value at this point in time.
