It's called machine learning nowadays, boomer.
Any particular topics you want to learn about? I had a supervised learning course in my MSc (taught as applied maths, only the lab classes involved programming), and I might be able to at least give you references to read about.

No, it's not. SLT attempts to create a whole theorical basis upon which machine learning is built. ML attempts to solve real life problems. SLT attempts to generalize problems, characterize them and see upon which conditions those problems are good. It hasn't muh concern for real life (see the "worst case scenario problem").

How the fuck do you think most of the algorithms appeared? Because people needed new statistical techniques to infer on problems with different characteristics. Anyone that actually studies ML will have gone over the theory and the convergence proofs of the statistical estimators.
