Imagine there were no atmosphere, like on the moon. The sky would be jet black, because it was space. Any point on the planets would be lighter than the jet black of space.
When we put the atmosphere back in, we are seeing everything else through it, so it would lighten everything else, including the empty space. So any point on the planets would STILL be lighter than the parts of the sky that are in front of the jet black of space.
