Not insane. He's a math professor in Australia who has greviences with numbers that have uncomputablely infinite decimal expansions, including most of the real numbers.
He developed a "new" form of trigonometry which relies entirely on elementary algebra on the rational number field, until you need to actually get a final decimal expansion, thereby minimizing the computational compounding of errors and removing the need of transcendental functions along the way.
