Some can say that there is no such thing as a bad trip, because it's a matter of learning how to regulate your thoughts and emotions. The person having the "bad trip" is self reflecting on the negatives in their life.
From my experience with acid mostly, I'd slip into harsh feelings that would get really intense and overthink everything. But then I calmed down and shifted my focus then the trip got better.
Also if you go into a trip with too many expectations based on what you've read or heard, you're setting yourself up for disappointment and forcing it (low key), instead of riding the current.
If it gets worse when you fight it, then you should try to relax and let things flow by. Metaphorically it's like getting kinked up with tension and having a build up of water flow, then it's rough when the pressure is released. Instead let the river flow at it's own pace and observe mindfully.
Would also advise for the less experienced to have a "trip sitter", to help guide them through the experience.
