Ions with high electrical conductivity tend to be used more as an internal ‘currency’ for ion exchange through cells. Plants use all sorts of electrolytes (and more specifically, ions) for various uses throughput the plant. Sodium and potassium have a special job through cellular life as an ion exchange currency. Cells can either emit or consume these special ions to change their electrical gradient- this allows them to either consume or emit other types of ions.
