My school, back in the late 90s, had p-chem where every three quarters was basically the wash out year for all the lesser students.
One quarter in particular was the worst. It's like the chair told this guy to be the department's drill sargeant gunny. Entire grade was based on four tests, midterms equal in value to the final. Graded on a curve. Class average on each test was 30%. Somehow, on the second test, my score was 60%, and the instructor shook my hand when handing back the tests. Other tests were at, or less then average. That one test carried me through the class for a passing grade.
Now I'm a PhD research chemist, and I still have no idea how I passed that class and graduated on time. Funny aside, my best friend, also in the class, failed. Spent another year in undergrad. Completely screwed up all the math. Ran into him years later, purely coincidentally, in grad school in a different state. Spent that last year harmmering down on his math, and was now a grad student in physics, of all things.
