Are there any respected scientists who had a shaky start to their academic career (e.g. lazy teen in high school, didn't get a college scholarship, made a few Bs and Cs in their 1st semester of university) but then grew to appreciate science and got better grades and did good research and got a prestigious PhD and eventually contributed something of value when they got older?

Or were they all grade-skipping 4.0 overachievers from freshman year of high school, and anything else indicates that you won't amount to anything?
