What will thoughts eventually become?
The scary part is looking at something like religion as a memetic organism. Its very good at reproducing, and once a population has been established its very good at surviving with defence mechanisms such as: "the evidence im seeing is a trick from the devil".
The only reason religious thought has fallen wayside is it has a tendency to weaken the host technologically. Which makes then easier to convert/overrun by less religious people.
But as a memetic organism, religion is an apex predator.
