What is your opinion on electrical engineering?
Is it the most versatile and directly applicable of the main engineering branches?
Is it the best specialization to choose in order to work on a variety of interesting applied projects? The only other one I can think of is materials science.

How is mechanical eng more versatile?
EE can lead to mechatronics rather easily, as well as anything from embedded systems programming, to semiconductor design, to processors, to grid infrastructure, to military contracting of all sorts, to telecommunications and networking...
From what I saw, the scope of ME is more limited.

In EE you don't learn dynamics or structural mechanics. Both turn out to be pretty important to building and controlling mechatronic systems. Oh and you'd be surprised how relevant fucking cam design is.

Electrical Engineering while very interesting at the start during the first year. Goes into specialization fairly quickly.

You can go into High voltage, high frequency, Audio, Analog electronics, Digital electronics.

And all of these have sub specializations as well. If you aren't an autist that already knows exactly what you want to specialize in it's kinda going to suck.

First year is awesome because you make your own circuits and projects. After that it will be specialize and the company you're going to intern at and most likely work for will only give you very specific orders that are boring as fuck.

I have a EE degree specialized into Analog Computing and I literally work as a Software Engineer right now. Something that I wasn't even trained for simply because I know about the hardware I have to program for.

So yeah the study and actual field is meh. But you have a wide range of fields to work in after graduation as well as enough skills to have a lot of electronics home hobbies.

There is a shortage of workers in every discipline of EE. However there are more jobs in high voltage due to the power grid being updated globally right now.

My recommendation is to just pick the field you are most interested in without looking at the market. Most people I know that regret their EE choice are people that picked something based on job prospects and salary and just hate that they now do it for a living.

But yeah power applications is by far the biggest. Digital electronics 2nd. Analog electronics third. The other smaller disciplines are a combination of the above and very specialized. There are shortages of workers in all of these so just pick whatever you are actually interested in.

If you pick electronics make sure to also learn how to program in anything other than C and Assembler so that you aren't limited to embedded systems/microcontrollers but can also work on software. So try to transfer your C knowledge into C++.

It really depends what you mean by most versatile engineering. In the traditional sense of engineering, I'd say ME is as they have to take a lot of courses EEs wouldn't like dynamics, fluids, heat transfer, materials, etc. that are more traditional engineering topics. They also get more hands-on experience building physical things (which feels more traditionally engineering than most EE stuff imo).

However, MEs don't get much experience with a lot of the modern stuff that's called engineering, i.e. software, algorithms, digital hardware, computer architecture, etc. and usually have pretty minimal experience with analog electronics.

It also depends on what you want to do with the information from said discipline, i.e. if you're undecided about what to specialize in, but know that you probably want to work with computers/electronics/software/hardware then obviously you're better off doing EE/CompE. But if you know you don't want to write code and want more hands-on-type experiences then you're probably better off doing ME.

I know there's not a ton of digital hardware jobs and there's even fewer analog jobs (and they tend to have a higher barrier to entry), but I thought comms/RF had a ton as a result of the rollout of new technologies and carriers looking to increase coverage and upgrade existing tech. Not that there aren't any openings for these positions, there's a pretty high demand for EEs (last time I checked unemployment was like 3% in the US), but regarding the total number of jobs for each speciality.

Obviously, software has the most positions, but you're also competing with a much broader group of people.

I have to disagree with this. I have created hundreds of different devices during my 4 year EE bachelors degree.

Because of the low costs involved with electronics it's far easier to experiment and create your own stuff. Most studies also have a physical project you have to make every semester. Most people also do their own hobby stuff at the side.

EE is by far the most "hands-on" study out of all engineering disciplines.

Is that really true, though? With even a vague EE background you can tinker with a lot of different things, anything that has to do with embedded systems, consumer electronics, radios, telecommunications...
ME isn't like that.

I wasn't really talking in the sense of labs hands-on. EEs (at least at my school) have the most labs out of any engineering major. I meant that anything they build is inherently a physical object that has to be machined and assembled, whereas an EE might have to get a PCB made and solder components onto a board and possibly put said board into a housing of some sort, which is a lot less physically involved than what an ME has to do (assuming they are actually machining and assembling the parts themselves, at my school there's a class or two where they do).

But yeah, in terms of quantity of experience building working projects, EEs do tend to get more experience largely because it's faster and cheaper to develop and prototype EE projects.

This makes no sense. You basically said "if you want to learn electronics learn how to write software so you can work in software instead of working in electronics"

Do you see mechatronics starts with mech? Mechanical engineering includes anything that is physical, anything that got heat transfer, anything that got liquid in it. Hell, it even got civil and material as a spin-off. Nanotechnology and acoustics are also part of mechanical engineering. It is more versatile.
