No. I'm academically inclined (PhD program, 4th year) and still smoke everyday. Everyone in research has vices, they just manage them well. Hell I think about science more while stoned

biochemistry/cell biology, a lot of fluorescent imaging/cell culture work. I smoke weed everyday (bong) at night (and sometimes during the day when I need to image and am burnt out), drink fairly often also at night/weekends, and do MDMA/LSD about once a month or two or so, usually alone and think about my projects.
50% of grad students abuse alcohol or drugs regularly or semi-regularly i'd say. My PI is very aware of my drug/lifestyle habits and does not give a flying fuck since I never miss any appointments, deadlines, or anything
