actually yeah, just re-checked on his wiki, and the year before he died was just him travelling around trying to connect with mathematicians and get recognition. He obviously failed but his traveling to try in vain for acceptance on the continent was basically what killed him.

again pulling from my foggy memory of reading a book on him (and galois), it was less the pursuit of recognition for personal satisfaction as it was that being in the community made it easier to learn and build off ideas. Plus you could make enough money to spend more time doing math instead of working some other job.
