Hi /sci/,
I'm curious about carbon and the environment. Most often I hear that we need to reduce our carbon footprint, reduce carbon emissions, do more carbon capture efforts and so on, but it all sounds like such a large-scale industry sort of endeavor, and not at all something that I personally can do. I was wondering about steps the common person can do, what they would look like and so forth. I realize that the impact a single person can create is pitifully small, but I am of the opinion that every little bit helps when it comes to large problems.

The question/idea I have may sound silly, but I'll pose it anyways. I live in a rural wooded area, and am using wood for heat in the winter. Burning wood creates ash and soot, and I would think that this would be primarily carbon. Is that correct? And if so, would I be able to gather it and store it somehow that it wouldn't re-enter the environment? If I just throw it out back into the woods I presume it will be reabsorbed into the ecosystem somehow, so how would one prevent that? Bury it in the ground? If so, how deep would it need to be buried to not risk being absorbed into the ecosystem? Thank you for humoring my curiosity in what I suspect is probably a stupid idea.
