Is there a way to turn a shoebox into a makeshift Faraday cage to guard against EMPs, protecting things like flash drives? If yes, how would you do it?

Line it with that anti-static mylar you get computer parts in, and wrap copper wire around the outside.

Why copper wire? Also, keep in mind, I'd want to be able to OPEN it without taking ten minutes to unwrap and rewrap the wire.

To do it right you need two layers, one grounded and one not grounded. You also need thick metal not just foil or Mylar since those are too thin for skin effect to work properly.

A solid metal box should work.
The more conductive it is the better it is.
Basically, when the EM wave hits the box, the electrons in the metal will move around in a way that cancels/reflects the wave.
The electrons will have an easier time moving in a low resistance metal and will do a better job of cancelling the wave.

Pretty much. Any EMP attack powerful enough to harm your disconnected electronics is going to completely fuck up your entire location with physical damage anyway. On the other hand, if you are a tinkerer and do lots of powerful tinkering like with big transformers, welders, or microwaves then protecting your shit should be done if they are going to be in the same room close by.
