Hey /sci/ outsider here. I was wondering if a mechanical/industrial (or whatever) engineer could answer a question I have.
So for example lets say
>I have a 10 foot long square tube carbon steel beam
>It has holes every 1ft down the length so that you can put a pin all the way through it (left to right, not up to down)
>this beam, with pressure pulling downwards on both ends (with the pin in, and middle of BOTH ends supported by legs)
>can handle about 150k lbs
What similar sized piece of aluminum would I need to achieve this number with ONE leg in middle? Just a rough idea as I know grade matters.Or would carbon fiber be better? Weight is the issue, so trying to cut weight. See shitty pic for example.
Or please let me know if there is some formula I can start with and go from there. I know there are other factors, but if we are STARTING at "you need a 10x thicker beam if aluminum minimum" then I might be at a wall with dropping the weight for cost. Thanks /sci/!
