My intuition is that, since the waves of the bluetooth signal spread in a manner similar to your picture, a small object that occludes the signal near your source (your hand, a cup or something else) blocks out a major chunk of the signal. Whereas given distance to spread around, the waves are less sensitive to objects between the emitter and the reciever.
