Depends on your definition of intelligence. Ants for example, as a colony considered an organism are highly intelligent; they use tools and can adapt rapidly to any environment. Under our current definitions though they are one of the least intelligent species on the planet. There probably could be a species similar to ants but far more developed, and the intelligence would be so alien to us we wouldnt consider it intelligent at all.

As for something which resembles our own intelligence; unlikely as our intelligence evolved due to a rapidly changing environment, which is something which doesnt occur underground. Most animals which live underground exist in very clinical environments.

The only exception would be human-like intelligence which destroyed the surface of its planet and had advanced enough engineering to make a living underground but werent advanced enough to make a living in space.

We don't have any other examples than Earth.
And we don't really have the full picture of all this life thingy. Eukaryotes may be the aliens hybrid, and archaea are the true life. Something happened long ago that turned Earth into a virus-ridden molten hell. Theia collision, something else, I don't know.
