Is there any reason not to use the stove as a makeshift humidifier by heating water on it?

it's really wasteful. besides, the relative humidity of a room naturally increases as it cools down.

Just get a spray bottle and mist it. Water actually takes a ton of heat to evaporate so it's really not worth the energy.

Wouldn't the water from the spray bottle just fall down on the ground? What's the difference from this method and simply pouring tap water on the ground?

I used to live in a really old house that had a pot-belly stove instead of central heating and one of the things I did in the winter was to keep a full kettle of water boiling on top of the stove
It really works best if you've got a drier climate.
