Regarding NLP, hypnosis, psychics and those kinds of things, they actually dedicated a good amount of resources to studying them and officially "they didn't find anything noteworthy". Guess you have to take their word for it.
For the regular guy, your best bet is to have an inquisitive mind and read a lot of top-quality research on the subject.
