Imagine an elastic line at rest.
To get from start to end it takes c (speed of light) time.
Now stretch that elastic.
It still takes c time to get from start to finish, but now the distance traveled is greater.
There's now a tension to the thread, it feels warmer, so the energy is not lost.
Intuitively, this is what happens.
Anyway expansion getting faster is expected, surely gravity slowed everything down preventing the inertia to fully express but as it expanded the nearby gravitational forces grew weaker and it speeded up, also who knows if space can actually express elastic properties and pull from the boundaries of the universe causing an additional elastic expansion speed.
Maybe if you add the two things together you don't even need all that magical dark matter to make things work.
