Did anyone else do badly in high school, and now excelling in university, but still suffering the consequences of not doing well in high school?

In high school i had lots of issues, i was an autistic scrawny brown kid. I didn't have the wisdom and perspective that i have now, so I didn't appreciate all subjects such as history and english, so i struggled with those subjects. I ended up top 13% and going to an unremarkable university (university of texas at dallas) with no scholarships. Since I have no scholarships, my parents are paying tuition with inheritance (really lucky).

After my 1st semester I started gaining life experience and wisdom, so I started appreciating subjects more and my GPA increased (3.05 in 1st semester, 3.7 in 2nd semester, 4.0 in 3rd semester). I easily found a research position in chemistry b/c professors can tell I really like chemistry and i'm not just another pre-med who needs lab experience for medical school application. However it's embarrassing that I'm going to a mediocre university (university of texas at dallas). I've been told it's not a good school, to shoot my ego down.
