>>11186294to do well you need everything you can get your hands on. math is the language of physics, quite literally. feynman helps when math isnt involved, the intuition so to speak. But even more intuition is found in the math of it. If I learned anything (this being my second year) is that you must love math to love physics (thankfully I do, if not more than physics). You should see math as an art and appreciate its elegance- it will help you throughout your courses. In your degree you will get the bare minimum in pure math classes, and the math you need will be taught in the phys classes, but I think its a good idea to take extra classes- like a math minor- to learn more of the behinds of the scene. I personally plan on taking differential geometry (somehow my shit uni finally got a course running just this spring) which will lay out the groundwork for general relativity. As for self-study, there are a plethora of great books out there. FOr classical mechanics, taylor is a bit old (and verbose, id didnt bother with it) and id look into Morin (his texts are concise and elegant). Id say that list is good in all honesty. Maybe its missing waves and vibrations and a prelude to qm (id recommend morin's draft of his waves book on his site).
As I see it, the bare minimum (so far) seems to be calc 1-4, lin alg, ode and pde in the future. Also complex variables
