I don't think it's collective in the sense that it's universal. But there must be some kind of genetic correlation to the things people see in dreams. Primordial fears or something that shaped the archetypes in our evolution.

Some of it is hard wired in us, some of it is developmental (a newborn isn't able to resolve a face much beyond what looks like a grey alien/a blank).
The rest is because you're raised inside of a society where these archetypes have been ingrained for so long its just part of that landscape..
