If the issue isn't politicized the journalist try to create stories which capture the imagination of the general public and "scientists absolutely STUMPED by new discovery" sounds slot better than "probably a measurement error, but we don't know, maybe ask in a year and we have an idea what is going, but probably it is nothing unusual".
If the issue is politicized the thing is entirely different, every time something scientific is published the side which is substantiated by the paper will create an air of "science has finally solved X, we were right all along stop arguing with SETTLED SCIENCE" around it.
In reality scientists are usually aware of the limitations of their craft and realize that things such as "settled science" do not exist and in fact directly contradict the scientific method.
