Can anyone *simply* explain me how Clebsch-Gordan coefficients are derived and what they are used for in quantum mechanics? (or provide a good resource)

You're not solving my homework but helping me out to help a colleague - it has been years since my chemistry degree. I'm now in another field and have forgot advanced concepts from quantum mechanics.
