I don't know superstring theory per se, but I understand the bosonic string more or less. In the bosonic string we could consider a background given by the metric, 2-form gauge field, and dilaton, and this would have to satisfy Einstein's equation, as well as higher quantum corrections given by higher loops in the sigma model RG equations. I'm imagining the same situation holds in superstrings except the equations are supersymmetric.
If that's the case I'm wondering if what Witten did is just relating some classical solutions to 10d supergravity to classical solutions to 11d supergravity.
