thing is, tungsten is near density of gold, with there being little to no cheaper metals that are heavier than gold
sufficient electroplating can make the gold layer thick enough that somebody using that thing (unglazed ceramic or porculain iirc) to scrape a bit of surface off of gold plated metallic item, it would pass the test
the density is mostly the same
and you can't really bite gold that wasn't pre-heated
you need strong x-ray gun or destroy the item
