If you can find strains which consistently consume pollutive compounds or produce combustible fuel, there's a lot of money to be made. There's a surprising amount of variation between populations of the same specie, like cold tolerance.

I worked in a lab during my undergrad with a grant from the state for producing biodiesel from algae grown in processed waste effluent. My lead professor published our work, and was credited with identifying a subspecies of Monoraphidium that was especially resistant to coldsnaps. He went on sabbatical during my last year, so i didn't pursue it further, but it could have opened a lot of doors.
