Would a helicopter work if it had rotors at the bottom instead of top? I'm asking because there is this guy (he was french iirc) who flies on drones so the majority of the total mass of him+vehicle is above the rotors so I thought it could work for copters too.

I mean, there would be some kind of casing around the rotors to land on, but the area above and below the rotors would still be open.
Or if there was a hypothetic low mass vehicle that has rotors at the bottom but they quickly hide when the vehicle is static in the air and fall.
Forget the details, all I'm asking is if that's physically possible for a vehicle with rotors at the bottom to fly and steer, no need to overthink that.

Yeah, something like that but there is one big rotor at the center and the helicopter lands on the casings, there is still some distance between the rotor and the ground when it lands.

With a single rotor hub I doubt it. You gotta realize that the body-rotor system behaves like a pendulum

You could totally encase the rotars, as long as there is airflow and enough thrust it could go anywhere. You just need to account for stability, service life, utility, etc

You could probably figure some sort of design out. The main rotor is inducing air vertically through the disc, so if a fuselage is above that, then it would kind of impede airflow.

Also, its super nice to have skids for landing in uneven ground or brush.

Also, if you were slinging it would be difficult for the pilot to manage the load, and in forward flight the line would travel backwards behind the fuselage like normal, but then strike the rotors underneath.

Also landing areas would need to be larger

It couldn't be done with a two-bladed system as they need to teeter to correct for differential blade speeds

The other big problem is blade coming - load the thing up too much and the blades are going to bend upwards and potentially contact the fuse. Most practical would be a multi bladed rigid or semi rigid head, flown slowly and with little load. ie there's a reason the blades are at the top
