Not only did my high school have a pre-calculus class, we had another course crammed between it and algebra 2, which was mostly spent studying trigonometry, continuity and limits, and some statistics, coupled with a review of algebra 2 material. Then in pre-calculus, we reviewed trigonometry and algebra 2 AGAIN, learned the VERY basics of set theory and logic, and threw in some discrete topics for the hell of it. Honestly, those meme charts that get posted in these threads aren't as ambitious as they seem, it's just that math education is unnecessarily delayed by bloated, repetitive course sequences.

The book that I was given was Mathematical Proofs: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics by by Gary Chartrand , Albert D. Polimeni , Ping Zhang.

There are other books out there that are probably better, but this at least gives you a starting point.

Sorry but that comes with the territory. Imagine someone who studies a subject from a book for a year, only to discover that a new book for that subject was just released and, as far as you are concerned, you believe it to be better then your current book. Does that mean you wasted an entire year of your life because that book was not available yet? Of course not, if anything, your efforts to push through the first book will help you in understanding the new book.

I understand the desire to optimize your study routine, but at some point, such research yields diminishing returns that could be better spent just studying the subject you're interested in

I'm a CC prof who did an applied MS (that I didn't care for - had an unengaged advisor), and I don't think I'm going to be able to go through life without trying to get a PhD. It'll be another couple years before I start and I want to have an idea of what I want to do in mind before going back.

Ah, yes. I too only understood group theory once I learned category theory. Seeing that a group is merely the set of invertible, structure preserving maps of an object to itself, that is, a groupoid with one object, really struck deep into me and gave me a newfound appreciation of the subject.

First Semester: Linear Algebra, Real Analysis + whatever extra non math stuff you need
Second Semester: Linear Algebra, Real Analysis + whatever extra non math stuff you need
Third Semester: Abstract Algebra, Measure Theory, Complex Analysis, Analysis on Manifolds
Fourth Semester: Topology, Functional Analysis, Number Theory
Fifth Semester: Differential geometry, PDE, Algebraic Geometry
Sixth Semester: Bachelor Thesis + whatever you are interested in + Seminars

Order of the courses can be swapped if necessary. Personally, I'd also recommend some QFT and GR

This looks like a typical European math BS. I envy them, here in the US you have to go through bullshit courses for the first 2 years. I came in with over 40 credit hours (around 3 semesters) from APs, yet I still have to take 2 core classes, and don't really begin rigorous math until later. Evident by how in the US we start with Calculus, whereas in Europe they jump into Real Analysis.
Fuck the US education system, everyone knows that students bullshit the "breadth" courses, and we end up learning less than our European counterparts in the field we chose.

To be fair, I used to think that the european model was superior, but I think there is something positive about allowing undergrads to explore different topics/not forcing them into one directiuon right at the start. They might overdo this at some points, but student that actually have interest in math still gain enough knowledge, while not hindering other student in the exploration of other topics. Only thing that irritates me are non proof math math courses in a math undergrad program, that shit has to go.

That aside, I only had Real Analysis and Linear Algebra and that were already 22 CP.
Number theory is neat to play around, but I don't think it should be compulsory.
