I have a colleague who thinks publishing in high impact factor papers like nature is the only way to succeed in academia. when ever some one talks about publishing in a journal he always asks about the impact factor. how do I explain impact factors doesn't matter as much as he thinks

you might ask him why he thinks impact factors matter so much. keep asking him why until you get to some common ground.

I think to succeed in science you need to do three things:
1. Do good work
2. Make sure people are reading your work
3. Acquire enough funding to continue to do good work

Publishing in a high impact factor journal can help with (2), and provides enough evidence towards (1) that it helps with (3) when applying for grants. But of course it is not the only way to fill those three goals.

Would it be possible to be admitted into a PhD program if my undergrad gpa was shit (2.9) but I've been in a senior engineering position for 2 years in the semiconductor industry? I got my bachelor in 2015 and I'm kinda bored. Not doing it for the money because I already make close to 6 figures but I really do love the field and am kind of bored of industry.

I like my research but it does feel like brainlet shit. I haven't seen an equation outside of teaching for a while now. Also nobody in their right mind gives two shits about any of what I do except the industry bugmen. It's basically very applied physics.

Could be worse, I guess.

that's the nature of research. unless you're competing with other groups to make ground breaking breakthroughs. for the most part research is niche and few people are interested. as long as you're happy and making good progress it's all good

Any tips for getting into semiconductors with bad grades? I'm looking to come out in the same situation as you but I have no idea what projects if any to do or if I should just focus on academic type questions like RLC circuits? Also how/where should I aim for an internship, I'm gonna be a super senior and I've only got tangentially related experience.
