Anyone have experience with rotovaps? Need to process an ethanol extraction but idk if I should go with a cheaper 5L model and do multiple runs or spend $$$ on a 20-50L. How long does removing 5L of ethanol take?

The bigger concern should be a propper vacuum installment. You need a decent pump, a Woulff flask in case you overshoot the condesnor, a vacuum controller, and a cooling water circle.

When all this is set 5l are extracted in about 1-2 hours with a 1 l destilling flask (5 portions).

Go with a used Büchi, they are basically indestructable and spare parts are still available. Don't go with this cheap chinese gunk!

Assuming that its an one time thing you could just save some cash and macgyver it by simmering it off with no vacuum setup (assuming that your product does not interact with ethanol).

Op here- Wholesale Cbd my guy. This is mostly a proof of concept before we move to a true industrial scale. Ethanol is used in excess for the extraction and it adds up quickly when you’re processing multiple pounds.

Op here- Thanks man much appreciated! What size collection flask would I be able to run if using a 1L distilling flask? And would I need to stop running to change collection flasks or can they be changed “on the fly?”

Any size works as a receiving flask untill it has a ground-glass ball joint and you can manage the balance of the whole aparatus. 1l would be sufficient, the exchange is a matter of minutes.

The destilling flask shouldn't be filled completely so the surface area is not too small. I'd recommend going with a 2l round bottom flask, if you can fit it into the waterbath of the Rotavap.
