Doesn't it depend on your interpretation? I'm pretty sure in some interpretation they are thought of as positrons.
Also, this brings up a much more philosophical question, can we say that anything we observe is real? I believe Kant argued that none of what we observe is truly reality, and we cannot observe true reality.

I don't think you've met many (or any) physicists, because they (at least the theoretical physicists) will tell you exactly what you just said. I think stuff might get lost in translation going from such a deep level of understanding involving a lot of math to explanations to 5 year olds.
