Hello /sci/,

I am currently a third year undergraduate at a university in the UK, I am studying physics. The degree lasts 4 years in total. I'd like to continue my studies afterwards, and since this is my penultimate year, I figure I should try to arrange something for the summer.

Obviously there are formal internships at fermilab or CERN or DESY etc, but I've also thought about asking some of my professors if they need any help over the summer.

Those of you who have done this and been successful, how do you do it? Is it bad form to knock on their office door, and politely ask if they have anything over the summer?

Any advice on this stage of the academic career in general from people who have been here already will be appreciated.
