Maintaining this technology is going to get more difficult as time goes on with fewer and fewer people understanding it. It'll eventually become magic to the perception of the vast majority of the population, with knowledge of its intricacies scarce or incomprehensible. The solution is to make the technology automated and thinking so that at the very least it will how how itself works and can maintain itself (or help others maintain it).
