I'm struggling with how high I should reach in terms of universities for a PhD biology program. By my senior year in undergrad I will have 2-3 publications, 2 years of research experience at an R1 university, tons of poster presentations, but only about a 3.5-3.6 gpa. Should I say fuck it and apply to ivy league PhD programs? or stick with lower tier programs? What's /sci/'s opinion?

It seems the benefit of applying to the higher tier program is that you'll be awarded with a much more prestigious certificate. However, the benefit of continuing in your 'lower tier' program is that you'll be all ready familiarized with the universities culture and you'd have already started to form networks within campus.
Remember, no matter where you'll study you still be given the tile of Dr. however one may make your resume look slightly better, however with the other the PhD make seem a little easier with due to that established social dynamic.

I'm trying to get into a program that will allow me to have free applications for graduate school, so I definitely will try to shoot everywhere if I can.

Apply for the best most well funded programs in the research of your interest. Most people at institutions like MIT did not have any publications to show.

Currently I have 2 publications neither of them first author, but they are pretty relevant in the microbiology. They concern discovery of inhibitors to multi drug resistant bacteria. Hopefully I can get a third publication as MAYBE first but that's best case scenario, I have about a year left before I start applying to programs though.

It really does depend on what you're studying, if it's Physics, Bio, or Chem related definitely go straight for the PhD program, since those get the most funding. If you get accepted into a PhD program they pay your tuition as well as give you a ~30k pay for teaching or researching. For masters program you'll pretty much always have to pay out of pocket.

From what I've seen, your cgpa absolutely doesn't matter. People who barely scrape through their finals end up publishing in Nature, and vice versa.

You have publications from your undergrad work, so that slready shows the univs that you're capable of research.

Are any of those 1st author papers? Those really help. Non 1st auth papers also help, but not as much.

What journals? What stage are they at? Submitted? Gone for review? I wouldn't count them unless they've already got positive responses from reviewers.
