Tour groups walk through Pripyat all the time, and some people never left. It could be repopulated today with little risk of even cancer.
Radiation falls off pretty rapidly as the amount of radioactive material decays away. Something like Xenon-135 has a half-life of only about 9 hours. After 3 or 4 days there's basically none left. For Iodine-131 you have a half-life of about 8 days, and anywhere contaminated will be walkable after about 3 months and livable after about a year. Other stuff like Cesium and Strontium can be isolated chemically or buried under a layer of soil to block their radiation until they decay.
