But in seriousness I would say study philosophy and hard science also. There are a lot of assumptions in psychology, some philosophers don't even regard it as science. There are issues with repeatability and the file draw problem. Take these things into consideration. It is still the best discipline for understanding the human psyche when studied in conjunction with philosophy.
tldr if someone starts blathering on about Freud Jung Campbell Skinner or archetypes they are not being empirical and are doing philosophy, usually badly, and without proper training. Make friends in the philosophy and science departments. Evolutionary psychology has massive overlap and provides the most compelling explanations as to why we think the way we do so check it out while being aware that you can usually find a study to support whatever politics bias you have.
