should I choose applied physics or some form of engineering for undergrad?
I want to say "i want to go into physics because I love it" and "i don't care about the wage", but the sad truth is I can only say so because i'm not really struggling for funds at the moment and I don't really know what it's like to do so.

I recommend a postgrad degree of some sort in computer systems engineering then tech entrepreneurship with wagecucking for big tech to fall back on. Wish someone told me this.

To add to this, try to get really good grades and do some virtuous extra curriculars. If you get into a prestigious graduate school they will pay for your study and give you a stipend which will enhance your future prospects immensely.

real advice. If you were gonna do applied physics, it's clear you're not hot on theoretical shit, and you want a more experimental track. for experimentalists, they often hire EEs, not physicists (depending where you go), and will always have one or two in the office.

Focus on analogue/digital/mixed-signal systems + embedded, and go for any instrumentation/metrology classes they might run at a higher level. Lots of options here - can do machine learning for classification problems (big in diagnosis/healthcare), do full-custom analogue IC design (power-sensitive/wide-bandwidth/MEMS instrumentation/design for radiation hardness for spaceflight etc), or just PCB design, or do firmware for other people's systems. Lots of niches to fit into, and lots of demand for the work.

I did a bunch of undergraduate research in the physics department (britbong here) despite being EEE, and ended up in instrumentation as a living. All the fun bits of EEE, no theoretical hassle, get to publish original research, and my hardware is going to space.

lots of options as well. I interviewed with a few places, got accepted for a gig as an electronics design engineer for x-ray detectors/medical devices etc, but turned it down to do a PhD in gravimetry, which has lots of neat links to fundamental physics. Have friends working on cell sorting, gas detection with single-electron transistors, all that noise.

Do EEE. It's fucking hard, but you won't regret it.
