Physicist here, in my second year undergrad I picked up an extra course in differential geometry with the maths majors. Sadly, that year I suffered from chronic migraine, and I ended up getting 9/20 on the exam. The rest of my grades were more than good enough, so I didn't have to redo it.

This is my third attempt at Analog Electronics.
Instead of taking me 4 years to get my degree, it will take me 8 years. And then I have to go through 4 more years of apprenticeship to actually get my license in the state that I live in.

Engineering is the best degree, anons.

i was rereading the same shit over and over again because i couldn't register it in my head, it was awful

For my Microelectronics course our first exam had a class average of 25/100. I had a 39 and was 4th place in the class. The problems weren't hard but the exam was designed to not be completable in the 45 minute time period unless you could look at every problem and immediately know the procedure to follow and what results you should expect by inspection.

Yeah, I don't really know how to feel about that class. On the one hand it was made so much harder and more frustrating than it needed to be because of the way the format worked and the professors need to basically make the entire semester grade reliant on a curve that he swears he doesn't do but more or less needed to (as there was 1 person out of 100 who would have passed without it and he would have gotten a D). On the other hand it's probably the subject of my junior year that I know the most about because of the insane amount of self-teaching required to be even close to being able to pass.

The just failed my third exam in cal 3. I'm disabled and have pretty severe insomnia, and haven't been sleeping right for weeks now. I've been lost on those topics since sleeping through a class. I studied quite a bit, but that doesn't really do much when you sit down to find a Lagrange multiplier but can't remember how to do simple fucking algebra. I'm not doing super hot in the class to begin with (barely had a B until this exam, now I've got a low C). I don't think I'll fail since it's only the final left, but my ego has taken a pretty solid hit.

Oh, well, I always knew I wasn't as smart as people kept insisting I was. I wouldn't be as upset if I failed just because I'm too dumb for it. Knowing I could have done better if I were healthier is really what's kicking my ass.

I've never failed an exam but I do stupid mistakes sometimes like I'll forget to include a sign in the beginning and that'll fuck everything else up. It's more a problem on homework where I don't check my answers as thoroughly because I just want to get the work done so I can move on.

Maybe that's why many college students take so long to finish? Because the idea of knowing you will still get your degree eventually still lingers in your mind. Meanwhile at my university, you get an exam, then you get one resit in the summer, if you fail that your finished. Same with class tests - if i missed two tests without an excuse then my credit would have been refused, which means you can't do any of the subjects the following years, and since you can't take another year you are basically finished. Not only that, there is zero chance you will get accepted into university again.

I wasn't the best at math, but the lingering fact that my whole life was screwed if i failed was enough to make me work really hard and finally get my degree. I just graduated in the summer and i'm taking a year or two out doing a well deserved lazy vacation.

Maybe it's just my university, but i also hear other universities are this strict in the UK.

Only once, in Control Systems II as part of the EE curriculum. That class was very hard and technical, even for someone experienced in mathematics, and I didn't really study much at the time due to lack of interest.

I failed statistics because I didn't read the text or attend lectures. I was under the impression that stats was "more or less box plots and stuff" and that I could just figure it out on the day. I tried as hard as I could on the exam and got an F. It was honestly probably the best I could do at that point in my life because I held the belief that math was boring and lame.
Read the text closely, attend lectures AFTER doing the readind, and clarify anything you don't understand during office hours. If you follow these steps you could get a PhD in physics with an IQ of 90.

thanks dude, i was considering graduate entry because i kind of still had it in the back of my head that no matter how much i studied, i wouldn't do any better on the exam since it's supposed to be like an iq test
so glad i had another go at it, graduate entry would've made me depressed as fuck while i studied something else

Bold of you to assume professors will provid any attempt at a course schedule or tell you about what you should be reading. More realistically, you listen to keywords in the lecture and desperately scramble through textbooks and wiki articles until you can do the exercises.

Also, you are lying, a double digit IQ is a limiting factor in STEM academia just as much as having a missing leg is a limiting factor in competetive long distance running.

Failed one variable calculus, multivariable calculus, mechanics 1, algebra and geometry, numerical analysis, analytical and numerical methods for differential equations, all multiple times. I'm retaking my first year because I didn't complete any of the math. Next exam period I'm going to complete algebra and one variable at least. Literally just keep spending time and effort and you'll eventually understand it. I don't give a shit about external success, only my internal progress, I can see the path forward! I think I will end up a much better student and person than most who are given everything. They don't know pain, or vision.

Last year I had depression and pseudodementia, but I didn't know it, because I was still better than the two years before that. I remember on a chem exam once, I had a question where it asked which one of these chemicals has the highest heat of vaporization, and i approached it as which one would then have the lowest boiling point since theyre inversely related. I was looking at the choices based on intermolecular forces and I remember seeing Bromine and thinking that the only forces holding it together are london forces, and picking that and then on my drive home realizing that bromine is a fucking liquid at stp and the answer wouldve been co2. Still got 18/20 I guess but still I shouldve just slowed down

I'm failing differential equations.

It's the first math class I've ever failed, even though I'm not an "A" student. Here is my notesheet for the last exam I bombed.

I didn't take the prerequisite calculus 3 class either (it's on my transcript through a transfer technicality) so that might be part of the reason I'm bombing so hard, so I'm going to take it next quarter. I don't suggest doing math classes out of order, folks.

It just overall seems like too much at once. And trust me, I've been studying for hours almost every night.

I've failed lots though
In uni I'd go to my math courses and always leave early while never paying attention and do well enough on exams to pass with whatever my grade depended on. I did this with every subject except philosophy since I actually liked it, and managed to ol good grades for every subject minus math since it's language based.

Really hated school so I never bothered trying, definitely need to work on myself before I go back

It's not about not studying the material, it's the fact that they don't have to study.
Instead of studying they just listen to whatever the teacher says and they've already got a bit of information.
Studying really isn't necessary if you're very intelligent, although "not studying" isn't exactly true.

failed a few in my first year, still hate uni and still hate trying. most of it is useless knowledge anyway and you dont have to learn applications of it so if you actually try for most undergrad stuff i doubt you will fail it, unless of course you dont have prereq knowledge

Yes it is the same in the UK. It makes it very stressful but as you said, it does light a fire under your arse to not fuck up. I also took a year out to clear my head of the stress of university and I would definitely recommend it. I'm now doing a research degree and I'm enjoying it very much. Enjoy your chill year man
