See that Gm^2 in the equation? How big is it? (In natural units where c=1, hbar=1).

You could counter that maybe it matters when |x-y| is very small, and indeed gravitational effects probably do matter at extremely small distances. But we have this idea called renormalization that what's going on at the smallest distances doesn't matter (its effect ends up shifting the values of masses and coupling constants). If gravity mattered in this case (it doesn't) it would matter for all other particle interactions too.

Sure, but renormalization invariance is an assumption that might turn out wrong at sufficiently low distances or _sufficiently high energies_. Gravity is not a part of the standard model, but it's effects might be what causes beyond sm physics, the strong CP problem or the unexplained B meson decay.
I agree there's no hard evidence it's gravitational effects that might be causing this, but there's also no evidence suggesting complete absence of such effects.

You need to learn how scales work in high energy physics. The effects of gravity certainly do matter in (very far) beyond sm physics. And what "beyond" refers to is energy scales much bigger than a TeV (which is what our colliders can see).

This new particle, if it exists, is a million times smaller than the TeV scale let alone the Planck scale. It has nothing to do with gravity

Mathematicians also use intuition, though. It's really only grad students and below in the symbolistic "rigor" phase of mathematics. There's a reason math papers are published in natural language.
