Is there any historical precedent for this level of population growth? African populations literally double every 25 years and this has steadily been the rate for over 50 years with no sign of slowing down yet.
People like Bill Gates claim this is the standard growth model for a population, that they'll eventually stabilize like native Europeans did. But the growth model is nothing like anything in history. Bill Gates claims what causes birth rates to decline is the very same healthcare improvements that's caused the population explosion in the first place when this is obviously not true. Bill Gates makes the baseless claim that there is a magical number of children parents want to have and that the number is 2 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obRG-2jurz0 ).
Birth rates drop when there is no incentive to have more children (e.g. a wealthy society, developed infrastructure, a welfare state, pensions, etc. general safety nets), as well as general cultural changes, but healthcare has no effect except to increase the population because it affords people with the ability to have as many healthy adult children as they'd like. Instead of half of African children dying before age 5, most of them live, but this doesn't result in Africans having less children.
The population of Africans has already far exceeded it's proportion of world population at any point in recorded history. That fact alone disproves the notion that this isn't an anomaly for population growth models. Obviously the rate will slow down at some point, but when? Will Nigeria's population be 1billion by the time this happens? Is this a joke? Why don't we see this as an existential threat to human life given the coming struggle to wean off fossil fuels and the fact that some day these nations will need to be developed? Why in the last 50 years have we provided Africans with aid almost solely in the form of healthcare but have done next to nothing to invest in infrastructure for them?
