this was experimentally creating a holograph. this has very little to do with the idea of holography in contemporary theoretical physics. almost nothing to do with that. he did some experimental physics of basically lasers and polymers. the current term refers to some mathematical "dualities" that guys like Juan Maldacena first "discovered"/invented
