I am sorry that a group theory course has left you feeling that way. As it’s pure math, a course on group theory is usually proof intensive. Groups provide structure for interesting math. A more fulfilling perspective especially since you come from an engineering background, may be in studying certain groups themselves and their applications (lie groups, orthogonal groups, etc.)

I took a course in mathematical proofs and it left me with the impression that all that computation-style mathematics that I've learned up to that point was brainlet material.

if you don't like proofs hire math is not for you. if you just don't find groups that Interesting that's reasonable.
the way it's taught is often lame. it's more of a useful tool when you understand lots of examples.

one issue is group theory has applications in engineering, e.g. lie groups come to mind with robotic vision applications, so these theorems aren't "useless"
another is you choose to accept definitions if they're obviously backed by physically observable phenomena, but refuse to even consider them otherwise

Lie groups are where the meat really is, from my experience (coming from physics, not math). Super fun material, incredibly intimately related to all of modern physics, lots of topological/geometric intuition. Although, not to be "elitist", you might not enjoy that either, considering your experience with this course.

yes, that's precisely what happens.
what is a good subgroup of a group? one which acts sort of commutative relative to the group. what is a sensible way for a group (which is obviously a bunch of symmetries) to exert its symmetries on a set? obviously by group actions. what is does the natural map between two groups obviously preserve? the fucking product.
are you insinuating that these aren't intuitively simple concepts?

Introductory group theory is rather basic desu. You just have to get the definitions into your head and prove the theorems - this is easy if you have taken a rigorous course on proofs, my university requires us to take 3 proof courses for the first two years and I can tell you that I wouldn't have understood any group theory without those courses.

Also helped with real analysis 1,2, and 3.
