Does anyone else do home organic chemistry as a hobby? this is a picture of me currently refluxing acetylsalicylic acid in dilute HCl to make salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can be used to make phenol (Tar smell, precursor to lots of other chemicals) and pleasant-smelling salicylate esters

The only anon I saw get fucked by his own chemistry is the uranyl nitrate guy. Sounded like he got a massive dose of radiation but whether it was lethal or not idk. Just like a scaled down version of "tickling the dragon's tail" during the Manhattan experiments.

nani? Why would anyone want to do this in their own home instead of a lab during afterhours? I'm assuming OP is no younger than undergraduate. If you're out of uni and not in grad school or in research and you're doing this, then eh I guess.

because i think organic compounds are cool for the hell of it. phenol also has a pleasant tarry smell (contributes to the smel of tar shampoo)
