What I don't understand is why the curvature of the moon is so evident. From all the pictures taken on the surface, the moon seems really tiny.
Just at this pic, it looks like the moon curves merely a few hundred meters away.

The distance to the horizon is much harder to judge in a vacuum, where there is no atmospheric scattering. It was something that occurred regularly on the Apollo missions where the astronauts would see a rock or surface feature that seemed fairly close but was actually hundreds of yards or miles away when they started walking towards it.

What you'd see in a vacuum is the "true" distance to the horizon, if you imagine a triangle between your eyes, the horizon, and the centre of the planet. If you're around 2 metres tall in your space boots that should be about 2.5 km on the Moon. On Earth, it would be about 5 km, but the presence of an atmosphere to refract the light allows you to see a little further (not much, maybe 10%). In either case a camera will naturally show the same thing as your eyes.
