You can easily show 1+2+3+4=-1/12 with just the assumption that 1-1+1-1+1...=1/2

(I'm aware of the standard argument $\zeta(-1)$ , but not of any algebraic characterizations of what is essentially an analytic fact.)

I'm assuming the following are allowed at least:
(Addition) $\sum_n [f(n) + g(n)] = [ \sum_n f(n) ] + [\sum_n g(n) ]$
(Scalar multiplication) $\sum_n c \cdot f(n) = c \cdot \sum_n f(n)$
(Shift) If $k < \infty$ then $\sum_n f(n) = [\sum_{i < k} f(i)] + \sum_n f(n+i)$
Anything else?
