First it defines a pentomino.
Then it asks for how many distinct pentominos are there. I got 12.
Then it asks whether a square figure with a "single unit square hole" can be made with 1 of each distinct pentomino. I got no, since 5*12+1 is 61, and that is not enough to make a square.

i think you are wrong, i imagined making pentominos out of tetriminos, adding one block. there are 7 tetrimonos already, and you can add a single block in various positions to certain tetriminos creating anywhere from 2 to more offspring depending on their symmetries

Yeah there are 5 tetrominoes, not 7. That info was given to me.

how did you solve it so quick? i realize now that even if a tetr has multiple offspring it can mimic another tetrs babies, how did you track these repeats?

also, there are 7 tetrs bc 2 are symmetric. did your definition of pent exclude symmetry?

I just kind of intuitively guessed and checked. I didn't use tetrinos as a baseline at all. For instance:
>1 tile is starting point.
>4 down makes a straight line
>3 down 1 right makes a tiny L
>3 down 1 left makes a copy of that tiny L, so right = left unless they are both in the same "equation"
>2 down 1 left 1 right
>2 down 1 right 1 right
>2 down 1 right 1 left...

I did that for every logical combo til' I got 12 and double checked that answer. Took more like 10 minutes, though finding the answer to the second part took 30 seconds.
