If the theoretical discovery is sound, then if experimentally we find no Hawking radiation it implies something big about the universe. I dunno what that would be though.

Shouldnt we be able to observe it indirectly? Below a minimum size a star wont turn into a black hole. It will just be a neutron star or even just a white dwarf. If we find a black hole too small for that we know it must have shrunk. Hawjings radiation would explain it. Such a small and old black hole would be extremely difficult to detect though.

Good idea, but black holes can in principle form from things that are not stars. Look up the idea of primordial black holes. Also the universe is not nearly old enough for a star to form a black hole and shrink appreciably due to Hawking radiation. The effect is minuscule

No, he's famous for surviving his illness longer than anyone else by several decades, and for writing A Brief History of Time. That book was hugely popular when it came out, and a copy will certainly remain on someone's bookshelf 100 years from now.

That's nice and everything, but the book would not have been popular (perhaps not have been published) if he were not part machine. There are lots of other science popularizations written.

I'm not saying that he was a bad physicist or anything, but the reason you've heard of him is because of his illness
