Hey /sci/, so I know some of you are ok, so I decided to ask a question here:
what do you think is the future of nuclear? I was thinking of joining Nuclear Engineering at Balseiro, the only place in Latin America that offers the course, but I'm afraid there is no future in it. Would you recommend it? Or should I go with something for general like EE or Chemical engineering?

reminder: the ATLAS experiment spends most of its time on proton-proton collisions which have basically nothing to do with nuclear physics. and even when they are detecting heavy-ion collisions it has very little to do with nuclear physics.

my take on the subject is that entering into a nuclear engineering program will mean your career prospects will be mostly dictated by politics. nuclear energy is on the ropes, but it may make a comeback. nuclear weapons are still going strong, but if people come to their senses then maybe there will be a cutback there. so it is complicated

EE or chem. eng. is much less susceptible to the winds of politics. so if you want to pursue nuclear engineering, you should study the movements that exist in that realm and make up your own mind. i don't think anybody could legitimately claim to know how to predict how those things will turn out

Nuclear weapons are going nowhere, especially since the public concern for nuclear war dropped off the map with the USSR and the end of the Cold War, no matter how the hawks want to bring it back.

And good thing considering nuclear deterrence has led to the single longest period of peace in Europe since Pax Romana.

I took a job that sent me to Brasil right after I graduated and I tried to start my masters while I was there but got transferred back to the US. I'm moving to Bariloche next year and just started learning about Balseiro. I speak pretty good Portuguese but mediocre at best Spanish and have never lived in a Spanish speaking country. Is it possible at all for me to be admitted? I'll live about an hour away, and while my work is related to nuclear engineering I'm an ME working under nuke PhD's. Can my company help get me in? They do a lot of nuclear research.

You can get an EE degree and then do a masters in nuclear engineering and become a nuclear engineer. If the field dies them you're still an EE.
For the masters you'd have to go to europe tho.

I think fluency in spanish is one of the main requisites for admission, at least for undergad.
You should contact them though, and see what they think.

no they don't. they need accelerator and particle physicists. not nuclear physicists. anyway OP was talking about nuclear engineering which is even further off that mark
